I could not accept been more than impressed with this volume. It covers everything from soldering to USB interfaces. Despite covering an enormous "surface area" of topics, information technology still manages to have examples, schematics, and practical advice for merely about everything. Amazing! The book has cursory coverage of a large diversity of hardware peripherals, interfaces, power supplies, memory, etc. There is advice for using wire-wrap, oscilloscopes, and how to make PCBs. In that location are explanations of assembly and the Along linguistic communication (in an fantabulous little summary). There are split chapters for, what, four unlike mutual microcontroller architectures? At that place is even a primer on the fundamentals of electronics and basic components such equally resistors and capacitors. It's incredibly broad.
Of course this book couldn't possibly have delved securely into any given topic but to be honest, most of that is best left to Internet searches or production information sheets and the book explains how to read those.
All of this is washed with conviction and good humour. Technical terms are explained as they are introduced. I am just actually, really impressed with Catsoulis as an author.
Ironically, it was this book that finally convinced me that I am not at a point in my life when I tin effort my hand at this stuff. I accept devoted my precious gratis fourth dimension to other activities and I exercise not currently accept a free slot in my day for hardware experiments. If I tried to exercise it, merely it would be at the expense of something else. Nevertheless, I'grand very glad I read this because I learned so much. When I do have fourth dimension in my life for hardware, I will definitely be re-reading this volume!

Ok, I'm only talking almost #1. Most software guys know how to exercise ii things: drink coffee and blame the hardware guy. Only if you're one of those special souls that wants to really larn but doesn't want to experience like y'all're starting college all once again... this is the volume for you.

A mutual joke:The iii well-nigh dangerous things confronting your completing your project:
ane. A Programmer with a soldering iron.
2. A Director who programs.

Ok, I'one thousand only talking about #1. Most software guys know how to do two things: drink coffee and arraign the hardware guy. Simply if yous're one of those special souls that wants to really learn simply doesn't want to experience like you're starting college all over once again... this is the book for you.
Reading schematics, doing pocket-size rework, getting a practiced general idea of all the hardware-level communication protocols and... yes, it has a blurb on how to solder.
...moreLike all O'Reilly books, of course, this i assumes a good bit of agile intelligence of its reader.
this book turned out to be just the sort of introduction I thought information technology would be, and what it advertised - plenty to become y'all interested & started. I freaked out a fleck when they started discussing 68000 fries for embedded systems. I wonderfully used 68000 fries for full fledged, advanced desktop computers.Similar all O'Reilly books, of course, this one assumes a expert fleck of active intelligence of its reader.
